Bio-ID Lab designs DIY algae-infused tiles that can extract toxic dyes from water. the project called Indus is a modular system of tiles inlaid with algae that can filter toxic chemical dyes and heavy metal out of water. Each tile is made simply by pressing clay into fan-shaped moulds with a series of vein-like channels. The veins are then filled with the algae hydrogel, which is supplied in powder form to be mixed with water. When algae are saturated they can be replaced with new ones, continually reusing and refilling the tiles.
