Shell Homage is a project of product designer Rania Elkalla. Shell Homage is a biodegradable composite material out of discarded egg and different nut shells. The created biodegradable material is replacement for oil based plastics and can be applied in several applications as in interior, furniture design, 3d printing etc… It looks like marble or natural stones but made out of food waste. the material surface varies from rough to smooth, opaque, translucent and transparent. The shells are collected, sterilized, dried and then ground down. This material is then bonded with organic and biodegradable substances. The material can be drilled, sanded or laser cut. the plastic is colored using food pigments.
