Mari Koppanen works with amadou, a suede-like material derived from the inner layer of tinder fungus, which she harvests and hand-processes through careful peeling, cutting, and stretching. She transforms this organic material into soft, textile-like surfaces or forms it into biobased composites using cellulose binders and gentle pressing. Her process bridges traditional craft with experimental biomaterial research, allowing natural textures and behaviors to guide the final form. The result is a body of work where fungus becomes a refined design material, shaped through patience, precision, and material curiosity.
