Iris van Herpen’s recent collaboration with biotech company Spiber spotlights Brewed Protein™, a lab-grown, spider-silk-inspired textile made through microbial fermentation. Derived from sugar and engineered by microbes, the material mimics the strength and softness of silk without relying on animals or petrochemicals. In van Herpen’s couture gown, the Brewed Protein is laser-cut and heat-bonded. The fabric’s lightness and flexibility allow for ethereal forms, seamlessly merging biotechnology with high fashion. This innovation not only redefines sustainable luxury but also positions Brewed Protein as a compelling alternative to traditional silk in couture craftsmanship.
