Hemp and eelgrass are the primary building materials used to make Mat chairs. The design team Foersom & Hiort-Lorenzen, who collaborated with Normann Copenhagen to create this furniture, spent years researching and developing it.

Mat is an investigation into the creation of a modern shell chair using materials that have a smaller environmental impact than the standard in the industry, with a focus on innovation and circularity. This revolutionary chair design was created after years of study and development by the Danish design firm Foersom & Hiort-Lorenzen.

The Mat Chair’s shell is creatively made from hemp and eelgrass, a kind of seaweed. The materials are what make a design what it is. The materials not only result in a more responsibly produced product, but they also significantly contribute to the design’s aesthetic by emphasizing the materials’ inherent beauty and tactility. The Mat line, which places a strong emphasis on responsibility and circularity, is made to be disassembled and recycled, meaning that the parts of the Mat Chair can be recycled into new products to complete a full circle of life.

The Mat Chair set consists of two shell-typing dining chairs, two-height barstool, two-height bar chair, and two-height bar armchair. All of these pieces can be ordered with front or full upholstery, a hemp shell, or a hemp shell with extra eelgrass added.
