Jesper Eriksson’s Carbon Capture reimagines anthracite coal as a material to be preserved rather than burned, physically embedding carbon within a new solid form. The coal is cast into a mineral/cementitious matrix, transforming fragmented anthracite into a durable composite that can be formed into tiles and architectural elements. Once cured, the surface can be honed, polished and sealed, revealing a striking contrast between the deep, reflective coal and the more matte binding material. The process gives coal a new material identity, transforming a symbol of extraction and combustion into a tactile surface with a renewed architectural presence.
